With the oil cap removed should crankcase oil be visible?

With the oil cap removed should crankcase oil be visible?

I recently bought a 76 kh100 and i was wondering if the crank case oil should be visibile? I was expecting to see a dipstick when i removed the oil cap, and all i saw were gears. Please let me know asap i do not want to lock up my transmission.
