The XB12X is too tall to compare to sport bikes, and too slow to compare to the big sport-tourers. I really fits in well with other adventure bikes, like the V-Strom 1000, BMW GS1200, Triumph Tiger, Ducati Multistrada, etc... I have ridden a number of these, and owned the V-Strom before picking up the Buell. They are all amazing bikes with great potential, in the end it all comes down to personal preference. The Beamer is hands down the most comfortable, but it´s too far sepperated from the road for my liking. The triumph is the quickest and in my oppinion the best looking, but it also comes at a steep price and dealers are few and far between if you need parts (something to consider when touring). The same goes for the Ducati. Aprilia makes a companord, or something like that, with their 60 degree twin that is perfect for long trips and all roads, but parts for it are expensive and usually not in stock. The V-strom is well mannered, cheap to operate, and holds a ton of fuel (200 miles easy). IN the end, I chose the Buell because it´s the most fun. Having said that, it is also the hardest to ride. It´s tricky at slow speeds and has to be warmed up before it will run smooth, and it´s a radial so it never runs all that smooth anyway. It does, however, eat up tight curves and mountain roads with more fun than is legal in some states. I love the Buell, and I only wish that they were still making them.
P.S. I won´t be buying any more Buells, since they went out of business it has been like pulling teeth to find parts. I have 32,000 miles on mine now and I just had to redo the top ends. It took about a month to get all the parts rounded up. I also needed to replace the front brake pads and was only able to find them on E-Bay. If you´re considering a Harley powered Buell, make sure you are willing to do the parts hunting when it comes time for repairs. I also recommend a second bike so you can keep riding while you wait for parts.
