Looking from the front of the bike. The terminals facing down. The plunger goes behind the brake handle end. You will have to squeeze the brake handle and it should fit right in. The screw is to the right then the connector is furthest to the right facing down. I think your problem may be that the old one is still installed and in the way. Go to boats.net and put your part number in. They have a perfect picture. Hold your part as shown turn towards you so it is horizontal and that is how it sits. The screw goes straight up.
