The price of a new starter is crazy. A rebuild kit from Caltric on ebay is the route I would go first. Personally I would get it up and running push starting if I had to before a lot of money. Mine is 1986 also. Recommendations, kreem tank liner from JC Whitney, inline fuel filter. Always turn off gas valve, I have flooded my crankcase with gas about 3 times before I rebuilt the carbs. If it backfires and is hard to start it may nee a valve job. After the valve job mine is great.Never let it run low on oil, it has a low oil cut off switch which will kill all electric. If this ever happens, add oil, push start to build up oil pressure, electric should come back on then. I have more info. Hit me up if you need more info.
