OK mine was doing this same thing, worst part I had to travel 900 miles with it doing this. Replaced the starter with a used one I found from a salvage guy and it was starting just fine for a month. Then just a week ago had to make a 150 mile run and it died and found no spark to my rear cylinder, got used coils and that wasn´t it, got new pulse generator and that got spark to both cylinders. Then mechanic replaced the fuel pump with a used 1 he had from a magna and it seems to be flooding out the carbs with enough pressure to actually spray from somewhere under my tank. Well it seemed to be and now I can´t seem to replicate the spraying and bike acting like it is flooded. SO going back in to check the carbs that I just replaced the vacuum pistons in both and it was running great with. OH point was the starter I got came off a 86 VT 700 and it worked great. Check salvage yards as the new starter can be found for around $200 but a good used 1 can be found for $80 or so, to rebuild can be around $85 if you know someone that can do it, unless it was like mine where the armature was fried, then you need someone to rewire it and well it is less costly to get a new one lol
