I received my bike last Tuesday (so one week ago) and achieved 2200Km this Sunday. I am living in Belgium and went 4 days in France (Alsace) to really learn my bike on all kinds of roads (from highways to mountains). Hence I can give you my first impressions of the New ST. In a previous note, I pointed out the heat problem. Actually, it’s not that a huge problem. When I first tested the bike my perception was biased by a really hot weather. This week, we were between in the 20-25°C range and I didn’t have any disturbance caused by the over heating of the engine. But, I was wearing leather. I will never ride in shorts or jeans, so, I will not be able to give another opinion on that point. With leather, it’s not a big deal. The brakes issue is more problematic. Actually, there is definitely too much movement in the lever. Anyway, brakes are good. It’s just an on/off feeling on a 5 millimeters displacement. Forget about corrections with the front brake when cornering. The bike will instantly react and drive you out of the curve along a straight line. You need to enter the corner at the right speed or just correct with the rear. I will have to keep an eye on the braking power. Until now, they are strong, but I am pretty sure it will fade away. At that point, another thing pops up. There is also a dead movement in the throttle. So I still need to find the right feeling to maintain smooth gas in slow corners such as hairpins. If you don’t turn the throttle enough and you have no traction, if you turn it a bit too much and the engine kicks your %!¤(softly, but with a shock). I am going for the 1000Km (!!)… maintenance this week, and that problem may be easily solved. I’ll see. It can also come from the optional heated grips and just need a fine-tuning. Except the brakes “annoyance”, the ST is an amazing bike, really comfy (as far as I know, for the pillion too…), powerful enough to be really fast on any kind of roads, and smooth enough to give a huge confidence on twisty B roads under hard rain (three hours Sunday, on my way back home). Suspension needs small adjustments and is, to my opinion, too soft. As a first try, I made 6 clicks on the rear preload. And I think the front should be a bit harder too. I will wait a bit more and maybe go to a suspension specialist I know, and ask him some advise (He made an amazing job on my 90.000km VFR 750 I use for track days. http://www.aragosta-suspension.com/). Anyway, the factory set up should match the expectations of most of the riders (Euh…yeah, I am at the sport end of the sport-tourers…). My next trip is to Switzerland in a couple of weeks and I guess I will have some updated feelings at that time. And I will also have received my panniers. |
