I just bought a used 2005 Sportster 1200 Custom. It had 24,000 miles on it when I bought it. I put about 1,500 miles on it since I´ve had it. I recently burned up a piston on the front head. I have replace the front piston and rings, front intake valve, rear rings, all new gaskets, and new spark plugs. I have multiple questions. First does anyone have a clue what might have caused the piston to burn up? I wasnt dogging it. I had plenty oil. When it happened it just lost engine power and blew alot of smoke out of the front exaust. Some people have told me it was bad gas or to low of an octane fuel ( I was using mid-grade ). My second question is when I got it all put back together I had confused my fuel lines. I need to know where the vent hose and supply hose are in relation to the carb, and tank. If anyone can explain that to me I would apprechiate it. ( Dang Rookies (Me) ) Also what kind of oil ( brand and weight ) would you suggest I use? And do you know how long I need to break in the new piston and valve? And if so how fast and how long? Also will I have to make adjustments on the carb since Ive done this work? I am open to any and all suggestion. I am a bit new a motorcycle mechanicing so any suggestions or comments. Thanks for your time. Micheal M.
