I have a 2004 factory racing editon KTM 450 Sx. Got it on a trade and saving to rebuild bottom end. In doing this, I´ve done countless research... Everyone has said that the 4speed, designed-for-track-transmission makes the bike too high-geared to trail ride or for in the woods. Also, there is no tps on this bike which I´ve heard makes throttle gentle throttle difficult unless twisting to wide open throttle. With that being said, there are only two tracks in a 100 mile radius of me and it WILL be tested in the woods somewhat lol. There is supposed to be a difficult, expensive method of adding 5th and 6th gear to the original trans but then the ratios would be out ta sack and you´d still probably have to replace 1-4 to match them. These bikes are designed, manufactured, and tested with only one thing in mind - TRACK SPEED. Needless to say I don´t think it will make the best kind of all around track/woods bike. However in around a month, mine will have basically a brand new engine top to bottom and regardless of where I ride it, it will face the gauntlet. ;) I plan on my buddy who has raced for almost 20 years to Lao it at the track as well as testing it myself on whatever kind of woods terrain I have the balls for lol so it will be slightly abused and then probably sold to fund a 250sx-f or 300 2stroke lol. I will let u know how she does. Hope this somewhat helps.
