ive got a 2003 xt and this bike has been exception and ive done river crossing that have come up to the handle bars and the bike went soo good that i went back and did it again hahahaha.but ive found exactly the same problem you have i just replace 2 or 3 spokes in my in my back wheel but other then that its been indistructable.
