Is the Pro JR 50 a good bike for a beginning racer?

I am looking to get my son into racing an MX bike. He is late getting into riding and has started to max out the capabilities of the PW50 that I bought him long ago. He is a very small (almost 8 yr old) and will be little too big for the PW 50 but just the rigth size for the 50 jr. I dont want to spend $2800 for a new bike and want to know what a good price for a used 50 is and what differences there are for each model year.
