From dr-z400s to dr-z400e

It has been some months since i eventually bought my first motorcycle, a dr-z400s and i believe it was a good choice since i find it very friendly to new, inexperienced drivers like myself and also easy to maintain. However, the reason i bought a bike was mostly off road driving and living very close to a mountain helps me practice this hobby daily. Was dr-z400s a good choice for starting driving off road (and simply starting driving)? How can i improve my bike´s off road performance? Many tell me i did the wrong choice and that i should have taken dr-z400e.How wide is the step from ´s´ to ´e´?(i plan to make this step sometime in the future)Finally why is dr-z400e 13 pounds lighter than dr-z400s?Thanks for the attention.
