Original sprocket size is a 50 tooth. It´s possible that a 40 or even a 35 might work but I was concerned with taking too much from the trail performance and off-road gearing. The 45 tooth boosted my cruising speed from 45-50 to 50-55 without winding the engine too much. If all I wever wanted from the bike was road manners, I´d have gone with the 40. FYI,(and anyone reading this that owns a TW)when I replaced the tires last month, I thought I was ordering identical replacement OEM knobbies when I ordered the Bridgestone TW 204s. They´re not knobbies. They pretty closely resemble the street tires that BMW puts on their 650 Dakar and Suzuki uses on their 600 or 650 dual-sport bikes. The tread´s deep but they look like street tires. They work good on hard-packed dirt but absolutely not good in mud or especially sand. On the road they shine. Very quiet and softer rubber compound makes for good adhesion. On a wet road (like any tires on a bike) they can be squirrely. Obviously there are going to be trade-offs with a dual-sport bike of ANY kind; this is the nature of dual-sport. These tires compromise off-road performance but benefit street riding. The ideal solution would be to have a spare set of OEM knobbies mounted on wheels with hubs. When you´re going to be doing exclusively street riding, mount the street tires and wheels (with smaller rear sprocket) on it and swap back for trail and inclimate weather. Just a suggestion. Randy |
