Sportster Oil Change

Today I decided to change the oil on my motorcycle, for the first time ever. I have good knowledge of this, but only on cars. Figuring that a car has a drain plug so my bike must have a drain plug I positioned a bucket under my bike and removed the drain plug. The drain plug is on the primary side. Only a small amount of oil came out. Then I read somewhere that I am supposed to remove a hose on the bike and drain the oil that way. Can anyone tell me what I just did???? and how to fix it????
