Too much power for first bike?

I´ve been procrastinating for several years on buying a bike. I took the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Training Course back in 2000! Haven´t riden since. I´m 5´8" and 160 lbs. I´ve read the Spirit is a fast bike, which kind of scares me for a first bike (but I would want to move out of harms way quickly if I need to). I´d probably tool around my rural town (Upstate NY) and take another safety course before I dare take in on the "open road". Any opinions on this bike for a newbie who hasn´t been on a bike in a few years? (Thanks)
