Shifting Problem

Coming home from a 1500-mile trip my foot shifter would not go into first gear or neutral. When I tried down shifting from third to second, the toe part of the shifter would go down but would not spring back allowing me to downshift into neutral or first gear. I´m not sure how the shifting mechanism wrongs but it feels like there’s nothing trying to pull the toe part of the shifter back up allowing me to continue downshifting to neutral or first gear. From second gear on up it seems to work fine. I did take it to a car wash and sprayed it thinking dirt or something else was creating the problem and it did seem to work but only for a short period. Any thoughts or suggestion will be appreciated?
