1986 FXR 5th gear on the countershaft

I just replaced 5th gear on the countershaft which had broken. The new gear (correct part number etc.) is approximately 1/4 inch wider than the old one. I removed the spacer which was next to the gear, and reassembled the transmission. Now it is problematic in shifting. Anyone know anything about this? I´m considering just tearing it down again, pulling out the gear and milling it to the width of the orginal gear, but I´d like to know more if I can before I do this. Thanks
