Review of the 1982 Honda CM 450 E:Honda CM 450 with three valves per cylinder |

This bike handles very well at sub-highway speeds. At highway speeds, I find it a little slow going into turns, requiring a lot of steering input force compared to other bikes. | ||
All in all it´s a nice bike, and its ´Capacitive Discharge Ignition´ makes it reliable and relatively trouble free. Oil changes are easy, but chain maintenance is relatively difficult due to limited access to the chain. The CM450E is a great choice for running around town, for short commutes or the occasional longer trip. It´s at home on the back roads too and even on well maintained logging roads in the hills, etc. It´s certainly no powerhouse, but it will hold its own on the freeways. Overtaking other vehicles while going uphill is a problem due to its power limitations. Very well engineered overall, for the 1980s. If it has any quirks at all, I would say that it tends to run lean. That can make the engine sputter and hesitate at low speeds. I´ve had the carb needles replaced to richen the mix at low throttle, and now it runs well. It starts super easy in summer temperatures, or after it´s been run that day, but it likes full choke when starting cold. Starting on cold mornings near freezing temp, it may need several pumps of the throttle to inject raw fuel into the jugs before it will light up. It really doesn´t like freezing temps, and may need several tries before it will run. This bike has three-valve cylinder heads. The intake rockers are forked, so that one cam lobe opens both intake valves. It´s no secret, as this is covered in the shop manuals as well. |
