I purchased my BMW used with about 35,000 miles on it back in 2009. I was impressed with the performance and handling right off the git-go. Low maintenance, and reliable, this bike has plenty of torque, and looks cool too. I only have one issue with this: with a bad back, I just canĀ“t ride it. Seat position, and body ergonomics just put way too much weight on your forearms, and you are always leaning forward using your back to support your whole upper body. | ||||||
The BMW R 1100 RS is a great example of German engineering. You get exactly what you would expect from BMW with this bike. Very reliable, low maintenance, great handling, and lots of power. I topped mine out at over 130 (MPH) with a large passenger, and it still had a little more to give. This thing corners almost intuitively, you just kinda think your way through the twisties, and it takes you right where you are looking. Very responsive, very tight, with all the controls right where you can get to them easily. Windscreen is adjustable for height, although I really don`t notice a whole lot of difference in air flow with it up at max, or lowered to the bottom rung. Seat is adjustable for 3 different heights from the factory, and easily moved between them. Getting the seat off can be a little challenging until you figure it out, it unlocks with the ignition key from above the license plate under the rear fender, and the latch is a bit quirky on mine. Mirrors are plain round, and provide a good rear view, are easy to adjust, and stay where you put them. Vibration is less than you would expect from a horizontally opposed twin. The shaft drive system puts power to the rear wheel without any slack or jerkiness, very smooth, and NO maintenance at all, at least I haven`t had to do any.... Braking is a dream, this thing will STOP! The ABS on mine never worked properly, from the time I purchased it, and the dash ABS light blinks on and off constantly, but it still brakes so well I have to get used to it again every time I switch bikes. Dash is easy to read, and easily visible from normal riding position. I really love the quality and performance of German engineering, and this is a superb example of some of their best work. I just wish they had given a bit more thought to comfort. Performance for this "Low End" used retail vintage bike is just off the charts for the age and period, and a great deal at what the market is getting right now, but it REALLY lacks comfort. I have a bad back, and I just can`t ride this thing for more than 30 minutes at a time. Your whole body position is forward leaning, which works great for handling, but KILLS your back, and your hands will go numb from the pressure on your palms after just a little while if you are not supporting your body weight by leaning down on the tank. So, I love this bike, I just can`t ride it. My only issue with it at all, is that you are always leaning forward with your whole upper body weight on your lower-middle back, and the only way to prevent back fatigue/pain is to lay down on the tank which makes you crane your neck up at an unnatural angle to see down the road, and lowers your ability to "throw" the bike around corners / obstacles. So, all that said, great bike for the younger set, or those that haven`t torn themselves up too much yet. Highly recommended, I think value for dollar, it would be hard to find a better dollar for dollar comparison to finding one of these used and in good condition for about a grand which is about mid-retail on them right now, (Sept, 2021). |
