Review of the 1974 Benelli 750 Sei:Benelli Sei - a nice poseurs bike |

I traded a 75 GT 550 Suzuki on a used 74 Benelli Sei in 1978, immediately regretting the deal as I rode away from the dealers. The bike turned heads like no other bike I had before it, but it was slow yet still OK to ride. Being as wide as a semi-detached didn´t help the higher speeds. | ||
I used to think my 76 F1 Honda 750 had poor ground clearance which marred it´s cornering. The 750 Sei was the same. The Honda had a higher top speed and slightly better acceleration than the Sei and it was a better bike overall, but that´s just my personal opinion. The only mechanical problems I had with the Benelli was the alternator, but it was an intermittent fault. I had to make up a special tool to take the spark plugs out. The spark plug tunnels in the heads are amazingly narrow. A normal plug spanner is useless. There was no toolkit with the bike when I got it second-hand. The six cylinder engine howling at 10,000 revs was glorious to listen to, especially with the noise reverberating off the walled streets in Cork Eire. Many times I´d see a group of blokes pointing the bike out as I rode past, probably wagering against the odds of it being 6 cylinders. Heavy braking from 60mph would induce the back end to wriggle so much that my mates following would slam on their bike brakes thinking I was about to stack it. From the seat, the wiggles didn´t seem at all bad to me. You wouldn´t believe a short stroke high revving 6 would have much torque but I was astounded when I tried pulling away from a standing start in 3rd gear. I slipped the clutch a little but as soon as I was moving away it accelerated OK right up to 100mph. No B.S. My oath. In 3rd gear 1000rpm = 10mph 10,000rpm =100mph I imagined the engine without a gearbox put sideways into a lightweight frame using shaft drive. That would be a great base for a US dirt-tracker. When the alternator finally gave up the ghost, I sold it to a mate for 350 quid. |
