81 superglide voltage regulator

I´m no mechanic. Bought an 81 Superglide in 1984. Wrecked it in 1995 and times were hard, so I pushed it in the barn where it sat until this year. It´s pretty much all original. No HD mechanics around here, so had to take it out of town to get it running. New fluids, battery, OEM carb, brakes, tires, & some clean up, & it ran great, but cost more much more than I´d expected. I was having a great time riding for about 2 weeks. Then the new battery is dead. I discovered the plug from the regulator was loose. Tried to push it back in and it turned to powder. Rubber & insulation were burnt up. Thought I could fix it and ordered an Accel replacement from V-Twin. When it came, I removed the old regulator & attempted to clean the char out of the block where it plugs in, but discovered 2 problems. The regulator had a female plug and is for a 1980 model - the new one has a male plug. Also, the plug in the block is broke - It´s male prongs were still in the old regulator. Is this possible for me to fix, or do I need to borrow a trailer to haul my bike back to the mechanic?
