manifold gaskets

Hello, I just installed cobra dragster pipes on my 07 VTX 1300C, and re-jetted the carb. They are a little louder than I wanted, but the bike seems to run better anywhere above 45 to 50 mph. I have very little backfire, but enough to be annoying. I believe that I may have manifold leaks which could be causing this backfire. I have read comments regarding the manifold gaskets, however, I did not find any gaskets when I removed the stock pipes. This makes no sense to me at all. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks!
