RE: Girl 17 loves bikes- can girls compete with men though...

You aren´t competing with men, you´re joining all the riders, so welcome aboard. Know what you want a bike to do for you, read the specs on what is available, then you can lead the discussion at the shop next time. Ask the salesman, "Do you really recommend this bike for (touring/commuting/etc)?" Expect them to stay to the topic and be professional. Sales are down, they want your money. I have been riding forever and still get treated like you mention, as if I should have brought my parents or my husband to "help" me shop. Consider buying a used, older bike in good condition. Ride it one, two or three years, keep it in good shape, sell it for most of your money back, and work your way up. That way you can find out what style of street riding fits your personal style. Remember, the issue is experience, not size, when it comes to riding well. There are a lot of small male riders.
