Clutch Longevity

My 82 GL500 interstate has 24,000 miles on it 2,000 of which I put on it since I purchased it last month. Everything runs great but the clutch is slipping. I´ve adjusted the free play and it still slips @ high speed/high RPM under load. I don´t feel like the clutch should be needing replacement the so low of miles. I´m wondering if the clutch just being 26 years old could be the problem, or if I should just expect to replace it every 25,000 miles.
