RE: GAS Mileage is poor

I´ve got a 2003 Wide Glide also. I ride solo (but I´m 250 pounds and always carry a pack with another 15-40 pounds on the luggage rack). I´m not too easy on the take offs, and love to gun it on the hills, so I would not call myself a mileage-concious rider. I´ve got after-market pipes and a re-jetted carburetor. I can almost always get 175 miles before I have to go to reserve. Mileage checks out around 50 MPG usually. I recently rented a 2005 Wide Glide while on vacation--it had no windshield and was fuel injected. I only got about 40 MPG during that 3-day trip. So maybe it´s the low windshield on mine that helps so much. I never had one on any other bike (thought they were for sissies), but now wouldn´t ride without one for lots of reasons (less bugs on jacket and face shield, less back strain at high speeds/on long trips/into strong headwinds, stay warmer when the temperature drops) and now maybe the mileage thing is yet another incentive.
