RE: XL350 MOTOR

just bought a 1984 honda xl 350 for a young man who is learning to ride. it´s his first bike. after driving it and making sure everything works I noticed the oil level part of the dipstick is broken off. I can´t find a replacement anywhere. my friend won´t be able to accurately measure the oil level. I´m no mechanic so I need some advice. if I knew the length of the dipstick portion , I could make a ruler style homemade dipstick to check oil level and just carry it in the tool pouch. any advice or recommendations?
