Fuel/tires?

I get about 30 miles to the gallon on the freeway and 20 around town, is this normal? Also my gas gauge does not work. Is this worth replacing? My tires are Dunlap which did not last more than 2500 miles can someone recommend a better one? I was told (after I bought my v rod) that my tires are only good for about 3000 miles. Is this true?
