RE: Voltage regulator

Hi Guys, My 1983 Sabre, which I bought new, has been garaged since 97 because I got sick of throwing money at electrical problems. Well, on a lark , bought a new battery and decided to see if the motor was frozen . Remarkably the bike started and idles perfectly. However, the electrical gremlins remain. The wires on the voltage regulator started smoking, which I then disconnected. Has it failed? Also, should mention that another reason for parking the bike was it would die after riding 2 to 3 hours. Does this indicated a bad stator? Thanks for the advice, Brent
