Bad Starter, No Problem

I´ve got an ´82 XV750 in great shape. Second owner. 40,000 miles. Usually starts every time I twist a grip. But just like ALL Yamahas of this era, the starter will sound like a box of rocks, even with a brand new battery. I was once approached at a gas station by an older biker. He commented on my bike and as the conversation carried on I asked him about the starter situation. He said he worked at a Yamaha dealership in 1982 and half the bikes came out of the crate with a started that acted the same way. He explained that I should not change the starter out, that it is 85% just fine. If I replace it, the same situation would occur. Just keep the battery in good shape and accept the bad starter design. In summary, don´t change your starter on any 1982 Yamaha except in a last resort. Have fun and keep the rubber side down!
