Voltage regulator is almost always the culprit. This isn´t just a VFR problem - out of the 4 VF series bikes I have owned - All toasted the regulator. There are after market regulators and even the OEM replacement is different than the original - More cooling fins for heat sink.

Replace it and your good to go for anther 5+ years.
