Hei, have you solved the problem? I have an 90 mod. VFR with similar problem as your discription...the problem to my bike is actually running on wrong kind off oil and (probably) worn starter clutch on the startmotor. Have changed the oil to Spectro(I belive it was) after recommandation from the dealer in Norway(my home country)...things got way better but there´s still some start problems below 5 - 7 dgr.C (worn starter clutch?). It´s worth a try and the spring is here :)
