Shifter Problems?

I bought a 1985 XLX 61 brand new in ´85 and have put about 25,000 miles on it. About four years ago I had some intermitent problems with the transmition sticking in gear.
Then a couple of years ago it stuck in third and although the shifter will move up and down it won´t move out of third gear and since I had some shoulder problems (4 pins in my right shoulder) I haven´t tried to fix it. Yet...
I´m now about to tackle it (as soon as I can put aside some money) does anyone have any experience with this problem.
