How to check for Stolen bikes |

I found out the hardway, you should not have to.. To see if a bike is listed on the insurance ´stolen´ data base (they NEVER purge these records, and if yours shows up on it when you go to get it titled, you will lose your bike, the engine, the engined cases, or perhaps all of the above. HD has numbers on the bottoms of the cases (under the bike) you can only see with a mirror or when the engine is out and laid over on its side. These numbers are recorded by HD when built and they link to the engine number (VIN) on the case, that you see at the top of the case. It has stars on both sides, on the older bikes. I found out that my engine was stolen 28 years ago, and had been registered under a modified VIN (they changed the 6´s to 8´s on the number. Your local hiway patrol will run the numbers on the cases (the bottom) and see if it matches up with the Engine number. If it does not, you got yourself a stolen engine or at least the VIN has been changed and they must (by law) confiscate the engine, or possibly the whole bike. -so be careful. I am trying to get the guy I bought from to help pay for new cases and labor. A real ****!!! hope this helps and prevents you from going through the crap I am now. |
