Primary oil?

Helped a buddy of mine change the starter bendix this weekend. I was told there wasn´t any primary oil to go back in. Also was told there is a primary chain oiler. It dumps engine oil on the primary chain. Is there no oil that goes in the primary case? I have a 1981 Super Glide and had all fluids changed. The folks that changed my fluids said it got almost a quart of primary oil. Does mine need primary oil????? There is a primary chain and other gears..... seems like it needs lubrication................
