One thing to think about with the older Sportsters (pre 2004) is that they were rigid-mounted engines. Since 2004, the Sportster has a rubber mount engine and it was the deciding factor for me in going with a 2005. You can get the 883 up to a 1200 and other than the expense, displacement and pistons it´s the same engine.
