Transmission oil in my HD sportster 883R 2006

I am confused about transmission oil in my sportster 883R 2006. I don´t know if I have to put transmission oil separately or the engine oil goes into the gear box and works as transmission oil too. I bought it used and the gears are clunking plus there´s some noise from the gear box too, although the oil level is correct on the dip stick. I would appreciate if someone could help.
