I´ve got a stock diesel for a while now and it really is special. Its a low rev engine and all the torque is in the low range (325 ccm). Accelleration is like a lazy 125ccm. capable of 45mph/70kmh flat out. Changing gear ratios may rise the top speed, but will make the gap between 3. and 4. gear become a huge leap. IMO the low top speed makes it impossible to keep pace with ordinary traffic and highway ride is suicide. When it comes to hills it goes really bad, slows down to 30kmh for the steepest slopes. So my conclusion is that this 175 kg bike is severly undermotorized. There are some modifications that could alter that; replace the engine. Two Yanmar engines, the 9 hp 406ccm 1 cyl or the 12 hp 809ccm V-twin should easily replace the ancient stock 325 ccm. Adapters are availabe, this is a split crankcase/gearbox construction so allmost any engine will fit. The 406 is at 55 kg and comes with electric start, so is the V-twin, and amaizingly the 809ccm got a lower weight 53 kg and would be much better. Revs are also higher for these engines rated at 3600 rpm (generator revved). And if one can be found, replace the gearbox as well for a five-speed. |
