Check your push rods. If your hearing alot of noise they are too loose, hard to start maybe too tight. Set them where they spin in your fingers with hardly any side shake. Get it started, warm it up,and re-check. If they are too tight your valves will not close properly.
I,m kind of new at this myself. I´ve been restoring my 73 XLCH and have been getting great advise from sites like this one. You might want to go to the S&S Super E. Its more suited for Sportsters. I´ve stayed with the original Bendix Zenith. I´m determined to keep my bike original.
O
I´ve re-chromed everything, powdered coated the frame, oil tank, and chain guard, polished the forks and front hub. I´ve had the wheels re-laced and the fenders and tank re-painted. Engine was re-built. I did change the exhaust though. I thought I would jazz it up with drag pipes. Got it started and it sounded great. I was in the process of timing it and had kick start problems. I´m waiting on a new ratchet gear. The bushing on the original was worn out and not allowing the ratchet gear to engage the way it should.
Sorry about ramblin on but I´m finding out that even I can do most everything on the bike. Get a manual and you´ll save around $70.00 and hour. Good luck.
