Charles, If you check your engine number we can quickly tell what model of Bighorn it is. My road racer has engine number 12083 which indicates it started life as a 1971 F5A. The 1970 and 1971 (F5 and F5A) models are essentially the same. These were the aggressive models with a claimed 33hp and the availability of the "Speed Kit" (piston, rings, head, cylinder, rotary valve and pipe) while the 1972 through 1975 models (F9, F9A, F9B and F9C (I have three of these)) were detuned down to a claimed 28hp with no new speed kit. Having said that the other specs look right although the factory Bighorns did not go to disk brakes up front until mid way through the 1973 season. Drums at Daytona, Disks at Laguna Seca. Not sure where the switch took place. The other interesting point is your choice of carb and size. Kevin Cameron was abvocating large carbs long before the factory. My road racer came with a 38mm Mikuni but KC was advocating (and using) a 42mm Tillotson carb on Cliff Carr´s 1971 Bighorn. I think Kevin has said you could go a big as a 44mm carb but the factory still specified a 38mm carb in their October 1973 specs. This is very interesting stuff, do you have any pictures of your Bighorn? I would love to see them. You can e-mail me directly at vivienrussell@sprint.ca I do have pictures of mine. Alas the Bighorns are now relegated to Vintage racing. One won the Open Vintage class this past weekend at Thunderhill, CA. John |
