Trans jumping

I Have been experiencing a jump in first and second gear when i get on the gas. I feel like it is a Problem in the trans, because it feels like somthing is disengaging, then reengaging. It is most commonly does it when the throttle is wide open around 4-5 thousand RPM. Someone at a shop told me that this is a common problem in sport bikes (whatever that means) and a trans rebuild is in order. Any ideas what might be happening? Is it a pressing issue? Is it drivable? Will it lock up on me? Any insight will be helpful.
