oil drain and relief

I just got this old GN 250. When I took off the oil drain plug a spring and plug came out. How do they go back in?
1) plug first Fat end up with spring over smaller end
2) plug first with small end up
3)spring first with small end of plug in spring
4) spring first with small end of plug down.

I put in in plug first fat end up. The bike seems like it is getting hot really fast. I have not ridden it because I have to pull the carb again and readjust the float. First float not closing gas running out of overflow, now not enough gas. One more thing to fight with. Any help with the relief plug and spring would be great.
