Engine number?

Hi, can anyone help me?
I have a UK TR7 that went to the US just after birth, it came bak to the UK in 1999 as a bonnie, twin carb top, the engine number is not the original & does not match what it should be!? The number is not overlaid with with the logo & goes like D16**BX Thats it nowt else, can anyone help me understand how the number is not a UK number?
I should add the number has not been tampered with. Thanks & all the best.
