Riding a 1972 Harley Super Glide FX, is about raw, old school, fun riding for me. Listening to the rap of the Shovelhead motor is my favorite, let it be cruising the back roads, to the main streets of NH. I must say people who know Harley´s....know the sweet sound the Shovelhead makes, and truly appreciate the vintage tones produced. For the one´s that don´t know the sound, when they hear it, they now it´s different from late day Harley´s, and really seem to be awe-insprired by the "72". The FX that I ride is minimally modified from stock, but has undergone some refinements. I choose to replace the carb with a new S&S, since I felt the original was a bit restricted. A great improvement performance wise, generating much more power out of the Shovelhead. The "72" is still a kick-start, and generally a 2 kick, and she starts right up. I quote "Chicks really dig a guy, kicking a bike!" I added forward controls to the "72" for a more natural riding posture, I will say in stock mode, it felt crampy, especially since I´m about 6´-3" with long legs. When I first took possesion of the "72 Superglide" the gears were set to race mode, backwards for most riders, set as 1 up / 3 down, so that you could hammer threw the gears. I decided to set the gears to operate back to 1 down / 3 up when the forward controls were adapted. This 1972 FX still has the original split tanks, which I find to be a classic attibute. The rear fender was sports a Fat Bob style, not stock, but pleasently exposes more rear tire rubber. I chose to paint this bike with the best paint "House of Kolors". At several shows onlookers thought that the bike was a late "90"s" bike, but the kick pedal, chain drive, and that....Shovelhead should have applied otherwise. If you ever get the opportunity to look closely at a 1972, look at the rear strut assembly.....It is a thing of beauty. With some chrome polish and a lot of elbow grease, this "72" shines. The 1972 is by no means a cruiser and/or should be expected to go long distances, since the Shovelhead seems to run hot. Also bolts seem to loosen quickly from the raw rattling produced from the classic Shovelhead as well. I quote "Secure your wallet, cause this ride will rattle it right out of your pocket." But, DON´T get me wrong a Shovelhead is truly a tough engine, that could probably get you cross country under the right conditions. My 1972 Harly Davidson FX Superglide is my favorite to ride locally, EVERY TIME!! A true classic treasure..... Get out and RIDE...Robert Pitard |
