| I bought my current ´72 combat 750 Commando roadster 8 years ago. My first was in 1973 and have owned Commandos off and on since. The items to watch for are the Amal 932 concentric carb bodies wear out from the vibration. The best cure is to bore the body and put a stainless steel sleve on the slide. After that they last a long time. The swing are spindle can get loose especially if someone has used grease in the grease nipple. The lube recommended is 140wt gear oil so that it flows into the small oil holes. The setup can be improved with a modification to add two additional set screws to hold the spindle in the engine cradle tube. The gearbox layshaft bearing goes bad. Replace with an FAG roller bearing. The combat engine 750s would destroy the factory main bearings and take out the crankcase. The retro fit is use "superblend" FAG bearings. The oil pickup was done poorly. There´s a modification to move it rearward and also move the crankcase breather from the back of the case to the timing cover (850 Commando style). If it didn´t come with one, add a spin on oil filter. Combat engines had pushrods that were too long due to the .040" milled from the head to increase compression. Shorten the pushrods by .060". Rocker oil feed lines were plastic, get brittle and break. Replace with braided stainless pipe. Make sure the speedometer drive at the rear wheel is well greased or it ceases. There´s a gearbox main shaft seal that can be added behind the clutch basket to prevent gear oil from contaminating the primary drive area. This will improve the sticking or slipping clutch. Make sure the clutch center doesn´t have notched splines. This will make clutch disengagement difficult. These are the basics. Mine has all of this and more and is pretty reliable.
