remove the plug and test it by placing it against the enigine and turn it over keeping hands awad from conductive surfaces to avoid electric shock (dont be scared it cant kill you , but will certainly give you a fright) if you have a spark it is not the plug - check the gap (mine was .711 mm new, but specs say it should be .9mm?), if you have a spark next check is fuel, make sure there is fuel getting to the carby by loosening the screw at the bottom on the side (float bowl drain screw) - if fuel comes out of the overflow hose at the bottom of the carb. you are getting fuel to the carby or open throttle whilst turning the engine over and if you smell fuel after a few turns then you are getting fuel to the cylinder.

Next things will get harder to troubleshoot but chances are the CDI unit has stopped working and the engine is very hard to start because it is trying to start while being fully advanced as a result of a faulty CDI unit. The CDI unit works by storing charge (retarding the spark) to simulate advance mechanisms on simpler and often much older serviceable machines. I understand the capacitors that store the electric spark burn out regularly as well as short out within the units because of water and cracked solder joints etc. The machines that make the CDI circuits are likely left unattended (in earlier years they were hand soldered in places like taiwan where life was very short with an average life expectancy of 37 years, the flux used to clean the surfaces to be soldered smokes and is very bad for people after extended periods causing health problems).

The CDI unit can be replaced and this could solve the problem at least temporarily, in my experience there is some other electrical problem that causes the CDI unit to burn out. I have replaced the speedo on my kymco ck that I upgraded to a zongshen/crossfire with a cheap one from ebay that I suspect is to blame for my own CDI unit burning out repeatedly - the bike is very hard to start and ended up chewing the teeth off the starter motor and wearing out the kick starter, push starting them is more conservative.
