71 Sportster issues!

My dad has a 1971 Harley Sportster... and there is a timing issue with it. I´m not really familiar with the motorcycle, but I overheard him saying it was something to do with the timing and some sort of rods? (Sorry, not a bike person!) Anyone have any idea what he is talking about? He has no idea how to fix it and is now down and out about it!
