Originally conceived of when Ducati was under the ownership of Cagiva, the firm decided to create a machine with which to compete in the Paris-Dakar Rally. The chassis is a purpose-build dual-sport design, with the motor coming straight from Ducati´s 750ss Super Sport. Other items, such as the forks, came from Husqvarna.

Competing against bikes like the Africa Twin, the Cagiva/Ducati compared very favourably; the extensive use of high quality plastics created a significant weight advantage over such bikes.

Many road-going Elefants bear the ´Lucky Explorer´ paintwork of the factory racers.

Sadly, the Elefant became an ´orphan´, i.e. when Cagiva and Ducati parted, neither factory was prepared to continue to support the bike.

If ever you have the chance to see one, however, take the chance to have a really close-up look because some of the detailing is fantastic.
