Sonoma 71 Ambassador

Having trouble with my 1971 Guzzi Ambassador charging system. It has a new battery and will start when charged but after I go for a short ride, stop, and turn of the bike it has a hard time turning over again. I have resently replaced the starter and ring gear. Also I just polorized the generator by arcking the B+ terminal to the DF terminal on the regulator.
Still still seems to be running the battery down.

Any suggestions on how to confirm if the generator, regulator, or both are shot?
