speedometer cable bracket on 1968 120

I have a 68 Bonneville that had a speedometer and now it just has the L shaped piece coming out of the case on the left side of the motor. How can I remove that and plug the hole. I bought a plug- but for the life of me can´t figure out how to remove the piece. thanks
