I owned a BSA B44 Shooting Star for ten years,(1976-1986), registration RBN290H, registered in Bolton, Lancashire England in 1970,colour red/black. A big, old fashioned, throbbing single cylinder dinosaur, my biggest expense on it was Borrani alloy rims and chrome spokes. The engine when hot, smelt of hypoid 90 gear oil, three different types of oil went into the engine, the clutch,(light), engine 20/50s multigrade and gearbox Hypoid 80/90s . I sold it to a man in or near Charnock Richard near Chorley, Lancashire. The worst problem was timing slip through the points moving, handling was good but it rode like a scrambler and was easy to ride stood on the pegs, vibration could be intrusive when still, at traffic lights, noise to the public varied depending on the type of silencer used. Various spares bought at BSA dealers and for good engine advice and parts, CCM Scramblers of Bolton and OTJ BSA single cylinder specialists. The bike could/should have been developed further,m but the parent company collapsed in 1972. I should have converted it to a Cafe Racer, but never got the time. I wonder whether it still survives.
