the most beautiful motorcycle i ever rode. exposed chrome coil springs in the front, 6 inch over-stock front end, chrome side covers, ape hangers, megaphones, at the age of 17 i was quite proud. now for dependability and performance, the other guys on the street respected the speed of the lightning, i did have a friend who owned a K-1 that would run 125, oh well, you cant have everything. i remember the first fuse she blew, at the stop-light Broadway and 28th, there must have been at least a dozen more, so i took the fuse out. i can remember where i was the first time she caught fire, i was towing a long legged beauty out to the airport, oh well, so in the end you do get whats comming to you. now lets talk a bit about the tool kit, what about that? enough to change a tyre, i can remember the first time i had to fix a flat tyre ,i was towing this great looking gal and the rearend slowly started to sway back and forth, thank god i wasnt going too fast, it was between Leeder-Bottoms and Hickory. those danged tyre locks sure did what they were designed to do except make sure they are fully lined and the lining is fairly supple, also that the tube is in good shape. make sure when you overhaul the motor, bearings and rod bolts are new and to the micron, make sure theres not too much compression either, the first and last time me and the old gal went down together was after a recent rebuild, you are always wanting to ride and if it means skimping...........dont even think about it! i was alone thank god travelling to carbondale running about 50 or 60, takin in the sites, when i saw two fellas sittin on japanese bikes. well down the road a piece the lower end destroyed the crankcase ,the bike locked up and she went down, i sat down and waved bye-bye, but got up and ran like the dickens to the ditch where she finally came to rest, i picked her up and just stood there in shock. the japanese boys came by and as has always been true in the brotherhood of bikers they stopped, turned around and came back to help. i eventually got her back home, traded her in but others were able to use what was undamaged , not a total loss. i dream of her often. |
